Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

I was beyond amazed by Mockingjay! It was simultaneously horrible and wonderful.

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.
--Summary from Amazon (I would have put too many spoilers in the description alone)

As I mentioned above, I loved this book. Suzanne Collins has once again managed to awe us with her talent! Her writing is beautiful. Somehow she manages to put you right there in the book. She makes Katniss's struggles so real, so powerful. I wanted to cry so many times, but mostly I think I was in too much shock to do so. Still, there were countless times in which I thought my heart was being ripped out of my chest.
Katniss was wonderful and strong as usual. It seemed as though she was a bit too lost though. I wanted her to be more of her old self, but I suppose the harshness of life just got to her. I felt bad for her because she had to grow up much too fast. Katniss is still amazing. Despite everything she manages to keep moving, to keep trying, and to keep looking for a way.
So, I decided who I wanted Katniss to end up with before I read Mockingjay. I chose Peeta. Then I read the book... I don't really like Peeta so much anymore but Gale isn't so fantastic either. Peeta is just, well, not Peeta. I miss the real Peeta so badly and I miss the peaceful time that Gale and Katiss spent together. It just wasn't the same, but I guess nothing ever really stays the same, right?
To this day I still can't figure Haymitch out. Sometimes I love him and other times I want to strangle him! I know he cares about Katniss. I know this. I just wish he would show it. Of course, if he did he wouldn't be Haymitch anymore.
Prim is as sweet as ever. She too has grown up throughout the novels and I must say she is quite the lady now! I'm glad that she got to spend more time with Katniss. They both seemed to be slowly pulled apart by the Games, but now they have a little time together. It's just so... wait I can't tell you that! :)
The end held me captivated. I think I sat there, mouth agape, for a full five minutes trying to digest everything. I can't say that I really liked the ending though. It just didn't seem like Katniss was truly happy, and that is what I wanted for her, more than anything.
All in all, this was wonderful! If you haven't read this yet, I strongly suggest that you do so immediately. You may even want to run out to the nearest bookstore now...
     Rating: 10!
I'm pretty sure you can find Mockingjay almost anywhere including Walmart and Amazon.

Happy reading!

I'm glad you liked the book. I actually liked the ending because to me it seemed like Katniss was as happy as she could get after going through two hunger games and seeing almost everybody she knew die. If it had been a "happily ever after" ending it would have completely contradicted everything Collins wrote so I was okay with the ending. The only thing I would have liked was a little more of Katniss and Peeta growing back together and seeing Peeta recover to more like him old self. I think that would have made for a better feeling at the end.

Thanks for the review!

That is true. If it were a fairy tale ending, I probably wouldn't have really believed it. Katniss just doesn't seem to get happily ever after endings, ever. I did want them to get close again. Maybe the ending would have seemed better, like you said, if that happened.
Thanks for the different spin on it! :)

I'm glad that you enjoyed this book! I definitely did. I have read some reviews where people were disappointed, but I think that Suzanne Collins made the best choices for Katniss. My choices would've been different, but they would've taken away from Katniss and Gale and even Peeta as characters.

Thanks for sharing you thoughts!

I miss the old Peeta too. I wanted her to be with him, but it seemed like she just did it because there wasn't anything better. Not really a love story.
I wasn't a big Prim fan. I didn't think her character was developed well enough - it was developed more in this book b/c we saw her grow up a bit, but I just never cared about her like Katniss did. I was really sad when Finnick died and mad that his death didn't get the attention it deserved.

It just wasn't what it should have been between them, almost like it was just convenient.
I liked Prim, but as you said we knew little about her. Maybe I liked who Katniss loved, the person she thought of Prim as. I feel the same way about Finnick's death! He was integral to the rebellion and yet they weren't very worried about him dying. It's not enough for him.

Interesting... Most people didn't like this book, and I'm afraid I'm among them, though I enjoyed the first two in the series.

It just seemed really anticlimactic - especially the ending. Sure, it was unexpected in many ways, but it was too dark, especially for a YA novel. For example, there was Katniss's decision to vote in favor of holding the Hunger Games - or the defeated attitude she shows in the very last pages, as she talks about her children... :^/

I completely understand where you're coming from. It could have been an entirely different story for how alike it was to the previous two. I was still holding on to who Katniss had been I think, because she just isn't the same in this book.

I really didn't enjoy Mockingjay. To me it left a lot to be desired. Collins set out with one bad guy and then added another, it just didn't fit.

Mockingjay was far from what I was expecting, and hoping for.
